St. Helen’s Convent was established in 1890 at Kurseong Darjeeling District mainly engaged in empowering the people especially women and children through education social and pastoral ministry. Our main aim is to witness and impart the values of Christ so as to being about personal and social transformation in and around Kurseong.

To achieve this aim we under took different apostolates as the following:
St. Helen’s Boarding School. It is established in the year 1891 to educate the local girls and girls from other neighbouring countries like Nepal, Bhutan, and other states in India. Our boarding provides children as a home away from home.
St. Margaret’s Home was started on 5th June 1899 to cater the needs of the less privileged Girls of our society. Girls who are abandoned or from poor broken families. All their spiritual emotional and material needs are taken care of. All are educated and trained according to their aptitude and ability so that they are able to face the challenges of today and make a happy home of their own.
The present St. Joseph’s High Secondary School had its humble beginning out of St. Margaret’s primary School which started in 1903. In 1938 the School upgraded as Sec. School and in 1997 it was upgraded as higher secondary school of West Bengal with Arts stream. St. Helen’s Community was also engaged in pastoral care for the people of our locality. Sisters visit the families of students of the sick, aged and the patients in hospitals In 1925 the Novitiate house was built in order to train the young girls to be daughters of the cross. Since the climate was too cold and unbearable to the youngsters, in 1999 the Novitiate was shifted to Barasat.

In 2001 onwards the Novitiate building is converted in to spirituality Centre (Prathanalaya) for spiritual programmes.

Gorubathan was introduced to our sisters by Dr.Oliva Rai one of our associates, who was actively working and collaborating with our sisters in Jesu Ashram in Matigara . After seeing the simple life style, love and commitment of sisters towards sick and poor people in and around Jesu Ashram she expressed her desire to have the sisters in her her place. On 15th December 2000, four sisters: Sr. Mary Asha Toppo, Sr.Shalini Kullu, Sr.Anastacia Bilung and Sr.Josephine Lepcha went to Gorubathan. The parishoners and father welcomed the sisters and accomodated them in the Presbertry till the convent was ready. On 23rd February 2001 the convent was blessed in the presence of Sr. Jacinta Mattathinkara, the Provincial Superior and many sisters and parishoners.
